Resume Summary Examples for Every Job (+ How to Write Yours)
Your resume summary is the first 3 sentences a recruiter reads. Make them count — here's the formula, and 20+ examples across every major profession.
What is a resume summary?
A resume summary (also called a professional summary or profile) is a 2–4 sentence paragraph at the top of your resume that answers: who you are, what you're good at, and what value you bring to this role. It replaced the old "objective statement" and is now standard on most professional resumes.
A strong summary does three things: (1) tells the ATS what role you're targeting, (2) gives the hiring manager a reason to keep reading, and (3) anchors your application around your strongest selling points.
The resume summary formula
Sentence 1: [Job title] with [X years] in [specialty]. Sentence 2: Known for [top skill] and [top result]. Sentence 3: [What you bring to this specific role].

Common resume summary mistakes
- Being generic: "Hard-working professional with excellent communication skills" says nothing. Every bullet needs specificity.
- Using first person: Write "Senior engineer with..." not "I am a senior engineer with..."
- Copying from the job description: Your summary should describe you, not echo the JD verbatim.
- Making it too long: Over 4 sentences and hiring managers stop reading.
- No results: Include at least one quantified achievement or specific credential.
